South Korean Military Services (Male Only)

Every male South Korean national has to undergo 21 months of military service at certain point after reaching age of 20.

However, since Korean government allows each individual to select their time of military service at one’s own discretion, students should carefully consider their academic progress and other conditions to decide when they would like to undergo the service.

Suggested Timeline

Apply for military service

Information on how to apply for the military service will not be discussed here, but can be referred to South Korea Military Manpower Administration website.

Apply for suspension of studies

After deciding the enlistment date, students should apply suspension for studies (2 years). The application form can be found on CUHK Registration and Examinations Section Website.

Back to Korea, serve military service (21 months)

Re-apply for student visa

All students who recently got discharged from military service, or who is going to be discharged soon should check their student visa expiry date. Normative period of student visa is typically 4 years, so most of the students re-apply for extension/re-issuance of relevant student visa before they come back to CUHK. Process for re-applying student visa can be found on CUHK Office of Academic
